Course Overview

Introduction to Islam Taught by Dr. David W. Shenk

This course invites students into a thoughtful exploration of both Christian faith and Islam, examining what it looks like for these two communities to engage one another with understanding, respect, and a genuine commitment to peacemaking.

Drawing on decades of firsthand experience living among and learning from Muslims around the world, Dr. David W. Shenk guides learners toward what he calls a gentle confidence — the ability to engage in meaningful conversations about faith with clarity, humility, and grace.

Throughout the course, Dr. Shenk carefully presents the essence of Islam as Muslims themselves understand it, while also offering an honest Christian perspective. His goal is not to caricature but to represent — and to equip the Church to engage the Muslim world faithfully and wisely.

By the end of this course, students will have a solid foundation for understanding Islam, a deeper appreciation for Christian witness in a pluralistic world, and practical tools for building genuine relationships with Muslim neighbors, colleagues, and friends.
